Clay Figure Zhang (泥人张) is a famous folk art in Tianjin, China. It was created by Zhang Mingshan (張明山; 1826–1906) during the Qing dynasty’s Daoguang reign (1821–50). This art form of handmade painted human figurines unique to Tianjin has passed on until now. The figurines are well-known for their vivid, realistic characteristics and portrayal of the figures’ personalities. Please enjoy coloured clay figurines of cute babies and two seated women in ancient-period clothing acquired during a trip to Tianjin.
Also, enjoy a Shiwan ceramic figurine of the famous Tang Dynasty poet reclining on the floor and holding a cup with wine in one hand, a sculpture by Singapore pioneer sculptor Ng Eng Teng of a nude woman lying sideways with support at the hip and both feet high up, and a square wooden jewellery box fully decorated on all sides with elaborate mother-of-pearl pictures of garden scenes.
