Posthumous Post
This oil painting of the Singapore River by Singapore’s pioneer artist Georgette Chen in the 1960s was sold at a Sotheby Auction on 28 Aug 22, at the Regents Hotel for S$ 2.01million! (Another artwork was sold for DOUBLE the price for Georgette Chen’s “Singapore River” at more than S$4 million by Sotheby at the same auction at the Regents Hotel in Singapore.)
It was a painting entitled Tierfabel (Animal Fable) featuring 4 Sambar deers, an Orangutan, a tiger and a snake, painted by Walter Spies (1895 – 1942), an ethnic Russian German-born artist and musician who stayed in Jogjakarta and then in Bali for much of his life when Indonesia was under European colonial rule as the Dutch East Indies.
