For more than 20 years, since 1990, I became acquainted with a talented artist, Cheng YJ, who settled in Singapore after completing his studies in Tianjin, China and Vienna, Austria. A master artist particularly influenced him at the academy where he studied, Wolfgang Hutter, who was a Founding Member of The Viennese School of Fantastic Realists. Cheng’s super-real paintings were much sought after by art collectors from Singapore and the region, and he often received commissions for paintings on various themes, which required him to take overseas trips. Cheng and I met often and had long conversations on numerous aspects of art. I often provided him with ideas of what to paint. We often visit large-scale art exhibitions and art auctions together. Consequently, I was able to acquire some of his best artworks. Please enjoy two of his paintings.
Tan It Koon
Before retirement, Dr Tan It Koon was, among many appointments, Head of Clinical Biochemistry at SGH’s Dept of Pathology. He was the Deputy Chairman of the National Theatre Trust and Chairman for Grants and Scholarships of the Spore Cultural Foundation. He received the National Day Awards, PBM, and PPA, for his contribution to cultural and community development and excellence in Public Administration.
