Please enjoy some interesting colossal ceramic sculptures of heads with engraved paralleled wavy lines and various emotional expressions created by Japanese artist En Iwamura from Kyoto, Japan.
These sculptures of minimal forms manifest wildly varied facial expressions that range from shock and surprise to moody contemplation. Etched across the surface of each character are neat pathways of parallel lines, which evoke the clean, sweeping patterns in Zen gardens, that are a physical manifestation of the Japanese concept of Ma《間》. This Japanese Concept of Space and Time, a very Confucian philosophy, identifies “the space between the edges, between the beginning and the end, the space and time in which we experience life. Ma is filled with nothing but energy and feeling.”
Japanese can visually identify with the meaning of Ma from its kanji symbol. Ma combines door (門) and sun (日). Together these two characters depict a door through the aperture of which 間 sunlight shines in. Japanese believe that there is a need for Ma in every aspect and every day of every individual’s life.
