Returns to vertical position
The non-fall doll is unique in that whenever it is pushed down, it will right itself and returns to a vertical position. It will never lie on its side, no matter how hard it is pushed down. This doll is also called the roly-poly toy. Its literal translation in Chinese is budaoweng (Non-fall doll) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roly-poly_toy
The non-fall doll is a toy filled at the bottom with a small quantity of heavy material that flows freely within the toy, e.g. sand, or lead shots. Because of its shape of a rounded bottom and the heavy bottom, the centre of gravity is kept low in the doll. The result is when the doll is pushed down, the centre of gravity (x in the feature image) pivots around the lowest point of the base and creates a turning force that counters the pushing downforce. This countering turning force invariably succeeds in turning the doll back to its vertical position.
Applications in the school of life
Being able to resist the forces that put us down and be defeated is a desired quality in the school of life. In order to be able to come upright again depends on the balancing skills in us, just like the sand or lead shots in the non-fall doll. Three skills are important. The first skill is to be able to evaluate the situation quickly and see barriers and obstacles that can be removed for progress to be made; the second is persistence in the right efforts to overcome obstacles — the idea of doing it right, and doing it right all the time. The third is the ability to identify the help that is needed beyond our own efforts. We may need helping hands.
Keeping the picture of the non-fall doll in our mind’s eye serves to give us a mental force to right ourselves and to resist defeat.
Each of us will have many stories to tell through the journey through life. With every single opportunity to rise against defeat, we become stronger and more confident. We become non-fall dolls without even knowing this happening to us.
