Being in the present
Mindful awareness practice (MAP) begins by achieving the three “S”s in our minds namely, Stillness, Silence, and Simplicity. These help create a calmness in our minds so that we can be in the present and be ready to deal with what is immediately in front of us without being reminded of the regrets of the past , and the anxiety of the future.
Many courses
There are many courses that teach and help us learn mindful awareness. In the Mind Science Centre in the National University of Singapore, Mrs Wee Geok Hua, the late Mr Wee Sin Tho, Professor Kua Ee Heok, and several others have helped to develop the MAP Programme as one of the four core programmes of the Age Well Everyday (AWE) Programme.
End in mind
The end in mind of the MAP Programme is to prevent and delay physical disability and dementia in each of us. In implementation, this programme is a community outreach programme that is sustained by many helping hands. Many of the graduands come back to be volunteer instructors to help us achieve the end in mind of helping Singaporeans to age well every day more rapidly.
Six Lessons
The MAP Programme consists of 6 lessons:
- 1-Attentional Skill
- 2-Listening to Your Senses
- 3-“No complaining Rule”
- 4-Healing the body
- 5-“Emotional Balance”
- 6-Friends and Care
We will elaborate on the six lessons in future posts. Keep a look out for them. We can aim to be proficient in Mindful Awareness Practice. We can.
The E-learning MAP Programme
We have also developed an e-learning MAP programme. The link to the Course Administration Office is awe.unilearn.edu.sg
Do call the Office to make enquiries.
This post is dedicated to Mr Wee Sin Tho who did much to champion and lead the development of the MAP Programme in Mind Science Centre.
